The Goldbergs Reviewed

ABC prime-time comedy The Goldbergs has been renewed for another season with lots more stories from the camcorder and charming nostalgia.

The Goldbergs, narrated by Patton Oswalt and taken from youngest child Adam Goldberg’s [Sean Giambrone] point of view, shows us that sometimes family life isn’t so perfect while offering us a look back at a slightly simpler time - the ‘80s. The storytelling in each episode isn’t overshadowed by an in your face retro vibe because the show creators didn’t use the 1980’s setting as a gimmick. The family of five, plus Pops, blend well together and make the show believable.

Perhaps the best part of the show is that story plots are based on actual events often shown during or after the credits from the real Adam Goldberg’s home video collection. While the show is loosely based on his family and growing up in the Eighties you can’t help but notice the authenticity of the era. We find ourselves pointing at our slim flat screen HD TVs yelling things like "I had one of those" or "I remember that".

The Goldbergs

Adam’s childhood trials include dealing with know it all brother Barry [Troy Gentile], twisted sister Erica [Hayley Orrantia], pants-less Dad Murray [Jeff Garlin] and his smother Mother Beverly [Wendi McLendon-Covey]. Though the Goldbergs often bicker - they always end the show with a positive and more wholesome message than most.

Some great moments from the show feature Adam dressed as a Rubik’s Cube for Halloween, Pops sneaking Adam into a movie theater to see Poltergeist against his Mother’s wishes and his brother Barry joining the wrestling team at school spawning his new catch phrase Welcome To The Mat! It’s no wonder why The Goldbergs got picked up for a second season.

Often paying homage to the 1980’s greatest toys, movies, music and moments makes it hard to be original, but somehow that’s exactly what The Goldbergs are - original.
